Types of fasting:
- The Complete Fast
This kind of fast refers to a total fast in which you eat nothing and drink nothing. The maximum time for this kind of fast is three days & nights.
See: Ezra 8:21 & Ezra 10:6
- The Normal Fast
This is the kind of fast that Jesus observed in the wilderness. It involved a total abstention from food but allowed a regular intake of water.
- The Daniel Fast
Daniel ate “no pleasant meat,” but instead consumed only vegetables and water.
See: Daniel 10:2-3
- The Group Fast or Corporate Fast
This fast is the kind that turned God’s wrath away for the wicked city of Nineva during Jonah’s day.
In 1st Kings 17, Elizah went on a partial fast of cakes made of meal and oil.
In Mathew 3:4, John The Baptist was especially creative with his fast. He ate only locusts and honey.
The Do’s and Don’ts of Fasting:
- When drinking fruit juices, avoid the acidic juices like orange juice or grape fruit juice. They can overwhelm your system. Apple juice is good, but be careful not to drink too much.
- Eliminate desserts, and at times, only eat fruit, nuts, and vegetables.
- There are times when you will feel week during a fast, so its very important to respect your body. If you feel physically week, sit down and rest.
- Start in moderation. Don’t begin with 21 days. Its just as spiritual for you to go on a one day fast.
- If you have any medical problems, consult your physician.
Symptoms you might experience:
During the first three days:
Headaches, nausea, dizziness, and a stiff neck.
Once you press through the first three days, you will begin to feel very good.
Flexibility is a part of fasting!
